Oliver, BC at a Glance
At the southern end of the Okanagan
Valley and known for producing some of the best wine in the world, Oliver is
the official wine capital of Canada.
Although the area is in Canada's only hot desert, the lush green acres are possible
due to the massive irrigation network built in the area in the 1920s on the
initiative of the then B.C. Prime Minister John Oliver. For this, the town was
named in honour of the man who brought water to the desert. People in town can
venture out to the over 30 wineries
and vineyards to see how the delicious grape-drink is made. In just over
3000 acres, Oliver is host to 61 percent of all of B.C.
wineries and 10 percent of all of the wineries in Canada. For those looking
to learn more about the history of area, Oliver
and District Museum and Archives offers enlightening tours and displays
showing what life was like here over the years. But if trekking out to the wilds
surrounding town sounds like a good time, Kettle
River Guides and Outfitters, can take visitors on nature trips and hunting
expeditions where they can track down some of the local game.
